From the moment Simeon prophesied that Jesus would be "a sign of contradiction" and that her heart would be "pierced with a sword" (Lk. 2:33-35), Mary pondered the meaning of his words in her heart. In this icon, Mary holds the Child Jesus close to her heart while she looks with deep sorrow toward the cross. Her sorrow was that many of her children would reject this unfathomable gift of his divine mercy. And so, when Jesus was "lifted up," she united her heart with his in co-redemptive love.
Sorrowful Mother Mary, fixing your gaze on the cross of your Son Jesus, you pondered his sufferings in your heart. Knowing that many of your children would reject his divine mercy, sorrow pierced your heart. Mary, make our hearts like yours, altars of reparation for the afflictions and offenses against your Son. Help us to bear our crosses, uniting our sufferings with his for the redemption of the world. Lead us into the fullness of the Eucharistic life you share with him. We await all this from you, Mother, for we are your Anawim. Amen.
